OHIF + eContour: Elevating Radiotherapy Planning with Advanced Visualization

We are delighted to announce the acceptance of our set-aside funding proposal for a strategic collaboration with eContour, a widely used radiation therapy treatment planning software platform. eContour provides image-based contouring guidelines and has been adopted by over 45,000 radiation oncology professionals across 128 countries, including approximately half of the radiation oncologists in the United States.

This collaborative effort aims to leverage the OHIF viewer's sophisticated visualization and manipulation tools through the Cornerstone3D library to offer enhanced 3D contour rendering, multi-modality image support, and other advanced features for eContour cases. This will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the treatment area while complementing the existing eContour viewer experience.

This strategic partnership addresses the needs of software users by enhancing standards-compliant data exchange and fostering interoperability between the OHIF Viewer and eContour platforms. By integrating their capabilities, it substantially increases the utility and adoption of both solutions within the research community, significantly broadening the application of OHIF and Cornerstone technologies across various platforms.

Other Viewer Updates

Optimizing resizing of the viewports

Enjoy a smoother experience with our improved viewport resizing. We have eliminated the lag that occurred when collapsing UI panels, making it faster and more pleasant to resize images within viewports.

Introducing the Revamped Toolbar

Experience a completely revamped toolbar, redesigned from the ground up. Our new architecture simplifies the process of adding buttons and tools, eliminating the need for hacks and workarounds.

The toolbar is now reactive to the active viewport, disabling irrelevant tools until the corresponding viewport is selected. Additionally, our new Toolbox component allows you to place custom buttons anywhere, from panels to pop-up modals. Learn more in our comprehensive migration guides and explore the full potential of our revamped toolbar.
Other Important Developments

Over the last several months there have been significant developments in our Cornerstone 3D library. While much of this new functionality is now available in Cornerstone, we will be rolling these out as integrated OHIF features over the coming year.

Accelerate Image Rendering with HTJ2K

Experience the power of progressive image rendering with HTJ2K, enabling rapid loading and refinement of image quality. With HTJ2K, load and render images extremely quickly, with the quality improving as more data arrives. We have integrated HTJ2K into Cornerstone3D paving the way for faster image loading and rendering. Try it here.

Introducing the Advanced Video Viewport

We're excited to introduce our new video viewport, designed for advanced imaging workflows. This innovative feature supports HTML5 video streams, enabling precise frame-by-frame analysis and longitudinal video annotations. Try it here.

Key features include:
  • Playback control with frame-by-frame navigation
  • Zoom and pan capabilities
  • Advanced annotation tools, including all tools currently available for the basic viewport
  • Customizable metadata for each frame
  • Dynamic adjustments for color balance, brightness, and contrast
  • Advanced contour and labelmap segmentation rendering and editing tools

Interpolation for ROI Tools

Automatically generate contours between slices with our advanced interpolation feature. Draw a contour on one slice, and another on a lower slice, and Cornerstone3D will create interpolated contours on the in-between slices. This saves you time, allowing you to focus on editing and refining your contours, and easily propagate changes to associated contours with a single edit. In the Livewire tool, the interpolated contours will even snap to the edges of the image.

StackViewport Lablemap Segmentation

We've expanded labelmap capabilities beyond volume viewports. You can now create, render, and edit labelmaps on stack viewports as well. This feature bridges the gap between 2D and 3D segmentation workflows, making it easier to segment 3D volumes. Additionally, we've added utility functions to simplify conversions between 2D and 3D segmentation representations. Try it here.

Contour Segmentation Tools

Easily define and visualize regions of interest (ROIs) with our intuitive contour segmentation tool. Configure rendering options to display contours, filled regions, or both, and adjust color, opacity, and line styles to suit your needs. Seamlessly interact with your contours across all viewports, and utilize advanced features like hole drawing and region removal/appending to refine your segmentations. Try it here.

Simplifying Web Worker Usage

Simplify your development workflow with our new intuitive Web Worker API. Easily offload tasks to separate threads, ensuring seamless performance and responsiveness. Our API abstracts away the complexity of Web Workers, allowing you to focus on writing code.

As you see, exciting work is happening in the Cornerstone3D, and it needs to be integrated into OHIF Viewer. We welcome collaboration and contributions to speed up the process.
